The Explora experience is by far one of the most exhilerating experiences I have had . The unique Explora locations, Atacama and Easter Island and Patagonia) make them an exceptional ?get away from it all ? option with a major wow factor !
Atacama is located 1 hour drive north of Colama (airport) which in turn is a 2 hour flight north of Santiago. I suggest stopping in Santiago for a night minimum simply to make the ?getting there? experience more enjoyable. its just too far to do this comfortably in one hit.
San Pedro de Atacama, in itself a great experience for any Australian traveller .. its architecture is adobe style being mud-brick over (usually) timber beams to support a building giving everything a rustic, rough hewn look and feel. Old ute trucks ? some working others broken, chicken wire or the odd animal in the back ...give the place a real ?Thelma & Louise? movie-set feel ! You know your alive!
Great local bars / Restaurants with good food all provide much local colour to the visual and intriguing experience
In San Pedro de Atacama itself is the Explora Lodge. Its 5 star accommodation with a terrific world-class Restaurant & menu. Explora pay special attention in providing a gourmet approach to food & wine in (all of) their properties, to complement fine Accommodation with their own unique character and charm. The outside building structure is being looked at for some refurbishment (I think) primarily for visual astehetic appeal, more so than for actually needing it. First impressions of the building are that it has the look of a ?Ranch? not a hotel ....but on entering the building you realise it has far more appeal and beauty than perhaps the first impression might indicate!
The activities ? there are a menu of activities for guests to take part in ...from easy to far more difficult such as black-run (as in skiing black run) horse racing! , canyon walking, desert safari tours and drives river & town expeditions etc . You self-access your skill at any particular activity by and large however there are skilled & experienced Guides with all guests on these expeditions so its as ?soft-adventure? as one needs it to be.

I truly cant recommend Explora San Pedro de Atacama highly enought ~ superb experience !
